Now check out the steamy excerpt from Wolfen Secrets:

The fire sprang up unexpected.  A lone, extended note of pain erupted from somewhere in the haze of smoke and flames.  Ty’s anxious search of the smoldering blaze didn’t go unnoticed.

“She’ll be all right, Lieutenant.”

Ty whipped around to glare into the eyes of the Guardian.  “How in the bloody hell can you be sure?  You stand here in the safety of the cool glade, while Sonja is out there in the flames somewhere searching for a lost child.”  Unable to stand in the wolf god’s presence any longer, Ty huffed out a breath before wheeling away to stare at the flames once more.  “Your audacity astounds me.”  He whipped back around, punching out a finger in the direction of the flames.  “I want you to tell me she is here with me, you overgrown bag of bones, not “she is all right”.”  He wheeled from the Guardian toward the fire again.  Sparks burned his eyes.  The change to a werewolf came on him like a refuge for his anger.  He embraced the shift.  With the glow of a shifter’s essence still fresh on his wolf’s coat, Ty growled low, leaping into the firestorm, leaving the Guardian standing there.

He could hear the fire moan as another gust of wind fed the blaze.  Hortence’s voice came to him on the wind-swept smoke.  In his mind’s eye, she appeared next to the Guardian.  Now, she showed up.  Unbelievable!

“He seeks his mate.”  Hortence’s words rang flat.

“Yes, he is having a hard time with the responsibilities she faces.  His nature is to protect a woman.  This woman is different,” the Guardian added.

Hortence nodded absently at the flames.  A great ball of fire erupted, spewing sparks into the darkness.  “He will find his way.  Compromise is the great mediator.”

Guardian flicked a glance her way.  “Sonja was correct.  You are full of riddles and conundrums, Witch.”

The old woman glared in return at the great hulking beast.  “And you smell.  What’s your point, wolf god?”  Without waiting for an answer, she turned to go.  “Soon, you’ll have your hands full.”  She flung the jab over her shoulder as she walked away.  “I’ll be taking my leave of this place now, along with its company.”

How’d the two ever get anything done?  Arguing was their only means of communication.  Still Ty remembered the Guardian’s words.  Was it true?  Sonja would have to face the demons on her own.  Surely not – they were wolf mates.  If anything, he’d be the one to face the bastards, not her.

She was in the damn fire alone, right now.  Struggling with something akin to panic, Ty swore low, before scanning the flames again.  Where was she?  Suddenly, the ground trembled as a great fireball erupted into the sky.  Searing heat washed over him in waves.  The fire was getting worse.  He had to find her!  Noting the girth and depth of the inferno, Ty sprinted forward.  The fire breathed as a living thing.  The flames continued to consume everything in their path.  “Sonja!  Where are you?”  No reply!  A sensation of helplessness washed over him, promising to engulf him in its grip if he wasn’t careful.

Stumbling, he covered his muzzle with his paw.  The smoke choked the oxygen out of the air, making it hard to breathe, not to mention think.  Something akin to terror gripped his chest.  Recalling the night she’d been bitten by her undead husband, Robert, he had to fight the notion she may be lost.  “Sonja!”  Ty’s howl echoed in the thick smoke.  No answer!  His chest tightened again as his vision raced in every direction at once.  “Sonja!”

Suddenly up ahead came a whimper.  His keen ears went on alert.

The fire moaned and yawed with another gust of wind.  The flames shifted toward him.  The whimpering stopped.  Scanning a few feet ahead, Ty bent low on all fours, forcing his way through with the fire licking at his fur.  He kept going.  Scorched and singed, he paid no attention as he struggled to clear the downed timber and burning treetops.  There she was, a smoldering figure staggering toward him.  Her fur, matted and burned in places, resembled a half-charred piece of white paper someone had crumpled before throwing into the flames.  Yet she lived.  Blinking, Sonja’s werewolf stared blankly up at her mate.  Those golden eyes of hers bore misery mingled with defeat.  She belched a plume of smoke from her muzzle.

“She’s gone.”  With those two words, she slumped against him.  The retched ache of her mind’s words wrapped around his heart and squeezed.

Still his mind cried out with relief.  Ty’s one and only wolf had made it back to him.  She reeked of smoke, yet she lived.  Gone was the pristine white of her mane, in its place a molten gray and black body swayed precariously in front of him.  He noted the large raw patches of scorched flesh and oozing wounds scattered along her back.  Still, she lived.  He gathered her in his front paws, licking her muzzle.  “Don’t do this to yourself, Nymph.”  His wolf’s mind tried to comfort.  The nudge he gave her with his snout didn’t rouse her from her misery.  “Were it in my power, I’d take this from you.  I’d make everything right.  You should expect nothing more when dealing with the vampires.  For all we know, this was a vision, like another of your hellish dreams.  Take heart in the fact, you gave it your best shot.”  Ty’s limited connection to her grieved him almost as much as the sadness in her eyes.  “Come, let’s get you back.  You’re injured.”  He ran a paw over the gash in her hind leg.  “A major part of my loving you lies in your courage, Nymph.  I’d never question your attempt at saving a life.”

With that, Ty nudged her neck, licking at the wound in her leg.  The attention was enough to rouse Sonja.  It was time to leave.  The portal was in sight.  She stumbled toward the light

Sonja Brooks’ body jerked, waking with a jolt.  She’d been dreaming again.  Running trembling fingers through her hair, she released an unsteady breath.  The darkness was always filled with hands clawing at her flesh, moans of anguish or sharp stabs of pain.  Being a werewolf had brought all kinds of changes to her life.  This latest plague was the worst.  Depending on an ordered, tidy existence was a thing of the past.  Would she ever be able to sleep without nightmares or rest peacefully again?

Her mentor, the witch, Hortence, had given her potion after potion to relieve the restless nights of dream after unsettling dream.  None had helped.  So, the night sweats and visions continued like premonitions from a horror play.

Her hands came down, punching the quilt on either side of her thighs in an act of frustration.

Immediately, Ty’s arm came around her.  Her lover, Tyler Loflin, wrapped her close.

“Easy, Sonja!  Baby, I’m right here.”

His strength – so solid and dependable along with his words – so warm and gentle enveloped her.  Nothing could penetrate his protection, nothing, she mused.  Sonja wrapped her arms around his solid strength, languishing in his hold.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes… the dream…I had it again.”  Seeking the crook of his neck as a haven, Sonja released a shaky breath.  Ty’s heart beat in solid, rhythmic cadence.  His long, dark hair skimmed her cheek in a soft caress.

“Here, now, let me hold you.  You can tell me what happened.”  With big, bronzed hands, he adjusted the covers, arranging a nest of sorts for her comfort.  “Shamans say it makes a bad dream better when you talk about the fool thing.”  Ty punched up the pillows.  Easing her back, he made sure she was comfortable before joining her against the cool cotton.  In a gesture as old as time, he reached out, brushing her curls back from her face.  “Now, that’s better?”

She let out a slow breath.  It was worth a try.  Nodding, she frowned, trying to recall the details.

“It’s the same one I keep having.  We are fighting the vampires.  There are so many!”  Her voice cracked with the last words.  She swallowed hard.  The tears couldn’t break free.

“I got you, Nymph.  You’re safe.  Nothing will hurt you, now.  Keep going.”

Sonja sniffed before sending him a trembling smile.  She loved it when he used the pet name he’d given her right after they’d met over three months before.  “All right.”  Shoving at her hair, she tried again.  “This time, the bloodsuckers are everywhere.  They’re coming out of the woodwork, Ty.”  She glanced at him, the fingers of unease showing again.  “There’s so many, I don’t think we will stop them.”

He patted her back gentle like, rocking her slightly in his hold.  “Just a dream, it’s okay, I got you.”

“We’re separated.”  She slid her hand between their bodies, wiping at the tears.  “I can’t see you, yet I hear you.  You’re swarmed by vampires.”

Panic clawed at her chest.  She clutched at her breast, the pressure there cutting off her air.  On a strangled cry, Sonja shoved away.  Suddenly, his comfort had turned into a vice-like sensation.  “I…I can’t breathe, Ty!”

He released her, rolling from the bed, before, reaching for her to follow.  Sonja went immediately into his hold.  “Watch me, Nymph – breathe,” he commanded.  “Breathe…that’s it.  Now again…deep.  Let it out slow.  That’s a girl.”  He raised her arms up over her head, standing with her until her chest eased its rapid constriction.  With his big hand, Ty gently rubbed between her breasts.  “Feel better?”

She nodded.  Soon, the feeling of security his hold invoked returned.  The anxiety attack eased.  Threading her arms around him, she smiled when his sturdy embrace encircled her once more.

“I’ll speak to Hortence again about the damn nightmares.  There has to be a better way to handle them.”

“Do you suppose they’re more than figments of my imagination?”  A frown crossed her brow.  Was it possible for someone or something else to hold control over her nightmares?  “Like a vampire spell or perhaps black magic?”  She leaned back in his hold, gazing steadily into his eyes.  “We may not be considering all the possibilities, Ty.”

“It’s not off to consider the vampires have powers too – maybe even access to magic.”  Ty shook his head before resting his brow against hers.  “We know so little about these damn creatures of the night.  It frustrates the hell out of me.  So, somehow they get inside your head, conjuring up a wicked dream.”  Gathering her close again, he tried to reassure.  “Tomorrow we’ll talk to Hortence.  She’s got to have something that will block the dreams.  I won’t give up until I find one.  I promise, Nymph.”

Resting against his chest, the vibration of his voice next to her ear as a welcome balm, Sonja closed her eyes.  Could the dreams be her anxiety manifested or the future about to play out in reality?  God, she hoped not!  Unable to stop her body’s cringe, the memory of the screams came back to her.  In the dream, Ty needed her help, yet she wasn’t able to reach him in time.

Now check out the steamy excerpt from Wolfen Secrets:

With fangs bared, Ty’s wolf used his superior strength to shove forward, ramming the vampire into the railing.  Landing atop the bloodsucker, he wrapped hairy paws around its neck.  “I’ll have the satisfaction of killing you,” he growled.  The vampire was strong.  Using all his wiles, he fought back.  Ty could sense the attempt to hypnotize him.  He threw his wolfen guard up as the lecherous bastard attempted again.  “Ha!  You must think me an idiot, vampire.  I know all about your magic tricks.”  Levering the vampire sideways, Ty managed a roll.  Soon the vampire found himself pinned under the dark, hairy wolf.  “How does it feel to be bested?”

Spit shot from the fowl vermin’s mouth, hitting Ty’s wolf mid-snout.  “That’ll get you a fine room at the inn here, you sick bastard.  I’ll make sure we find you the cream of the crop in accommodations during your stay.”  Ty hauled the vampire up by his collar, holding the vermin tight.

Suddenly, Sonja came rushing out.  “Let him go, Ty!”

Disbelief actually formed on his wolf’s face.  “You want me to let him go?  This is one less we’ll have to worry about.”

She shifted almost as smoothly as he dropped his pants before getting into bed.  “Yes, I’ll take it from here.”  With the statement, she wheeled, sending out a ferocious kick to the vampire’s head.  His senses lost, the creature fell to the balcony floor with such force as to go tumbling through.  Jeb was ready for him.

“I had this under control,” Ty growled.  His nostrils flaring, he pawed the wood, leaving claw marks in his wake.

Fire shot from her eyes as she shifted back into a woman, clutching her arms across her privates.  “Yes, they came because of me, though!  They’re my responsibility to end.”  Shivering, she glanced about.  “Where’s Smitty?”

“How the hell should I know?”  Ty’s next words weren’t ones he wanted to share aloud.  He concentrated on shifting, instead.  With one last snarl in her direction, he left Sonja to join Jeb on the street.  “Thank you, general.”

“My pleasure, Lieutenant.”

Ty’s brow wrinkled in a study of perplexed scrutiny of the major general.

“What, you wondering how it is I would end one of my own?”  Jeb’s laugh was like broken glass.  “It’s easy, actually.  I still care.  They’ve lost the last of their humanity, Lieutenant.”

Jeb’s rational was good enough for Ty.  Giving the major general a pat on the back, he lifted his eyes to gaze into Sonja’s hypnotic gold ones glowering at him from the balcony.  “All’s well.  Go back to bed.  I’ll be there soon.”

She didn’t utter a sound, simply turned, disappearing from view.

Jeb followed Ty’s gaze with narrowed eyes.  “Your woman is upset with you.  Why?”

Ty’s laugh contained shards of glass.  “I took matters into my own hands.”  He flicked a glance at his companion.  “Apparently, it wasn’t something she wanted me to do.”

“Well, apparently, you’ve got some explaining to do.  Win her over to your way of thinking, Lieutenant.  I wager you’re up to the task.”  Jeb grinned into the moon light, his teeth gleaming against the darkness.

“You wager, eh?”  Ty rolled his eyes.  “I may be a fool, but I’m going to take your bet.”  With an easier grin on his face, he offered Jeb his hand.  “Meet me down at the docks tomorrow before the sun rises.”

“I’ll be there after the sun rises.  You forget I have wolf blood in me, as well.”  The general smile was wry.

Ty nodded, his smile accepting of the general’s words.  “When the rooster crows, I’ll meet you to explain the rest of my plan, General.”  Turning to leave, he called over his shoulder, “I appreciate your help tonight.”

The general had lit another smoke.  With the cheroot between his fingers, he examined the smoke rising idly from the tobacco.  “Think nothing of it, Lieutenant.  We’re all in this damn war together.”

***

She rolled to face him as he entered the room.  “How dare you plan an attack without me.”

“You were listening.  How convenient.”  Sarcasm dripped from his statement.  Ty moved around the bed to sit on her side.  He reached out, giving the cover a tug.  She held fast.  He pulled harder.  “Since you’re so good at listening, hear this.  I won’t be put in a position like tonight’s again.  Do I make myself clear?”  His eyes narrowed on her as she glared back.  “I want what’s best for you, Sonja.”  She turned away.  He reached out, yanking her chin back.  “Look at me when I’m speaking to you.”  Pausing, Ty tried again.  “I’m a full grown man with enough sense to take care of what’s mine.”  He took her face in his hands.  She resisted.  He merely tightened his hold.  “Don’t.  Don’t fight me on this.  You’ll only lose.  I want you to understand something.  I’m grateful to you for saving me.  I’ll always be in your debt.  Without you to save me, without your blood to heal me, I would have surely died.”  He gentled his grip, tracing her cheek with the tip of one slim finger.  “As a man and a former lieutenant in the Confederate Army, I am quite capable, no, able, to take care of myself and what’s mine.”  He pointed a finger at her right under her pert nose.  “You, my dear, are mine.  I had the situation under control.  The next time you interfere, I’ll take you over my knee.”  With the last words, her eyes grew big as he lowered his mouth to capture hers.  She beat against his chest, pushing, groaning when he wouldn’t release her.  Ty held firm.  Crushing his mouth to hers, he captured her lips in an unrelenting assault.  The kiss began as possession as he forced his demand on her with his lips and tongue.  Soon, the moist heat of her mouth against his, led Ty to gentle the kiss.  He sucked her bottom lip and groaned when she shuttered.  Growling soft and low in his throat, he dragged his mouth away.  The heat of her soft breath coaxed him to return as his tongue entwined with hers.  Her fingers urgently racing through his hair set his nerve endings on fire.  She wrapped her arms around him as another soft moan left her lips.  He explored her breasts, her stomach, finally finding the spot he sought in her tight, hot heat.  “So much woman.  I can’t stop thinking about sliding between your legs to feel you wrap around me.”  He eased back, drinking in her beauty.  The need surged up, catapulting him higher.  “Nymph, you understand me well.  You know a kill stirs my juices, makes me crave what’s mine.”  He growled, a low feral sound, as he buried his head in her soft woman’s flesh.

“Me too,” she whispered.  “Will you make love to me, Ty?”  She arched with his touch.  “I need you so badly.”

Running his tongue along the inside of her silken thigh, Ty moaned deep in his throat.  Her skin was as baby-soft as he remembered.  The scent of her called to him.  He leaned in, stirring her arousal.  The tender stroke of his tongue sent shivers rippling through her flesh.  She moaned as she reached for him.  Lacing fingers with hers, he rose up, gazing into her face.  A sweet yearning showed in her eyes, his woman, his heart.  “You’re beautiful like this.”  The need to speak the words rose unbidden.  “I love you, Nymph.  I always will.  You’re the one.  The one I’ve searched for.”  He shook his head only inches form her face.  “Don’t shut me out.”

She furrowed her brow.  “I’d never do that.”

“You have.  You don’t realize the fact, but you’re trying to do that.  I’m your mate, your equal.  Yet, you try to protect me as if I were unable to stand for myself.  A man can’t deal with such a situation.  Let me be a man.”

She searched his face.  Her eyes soon filled with tears.  “I’m sorry.  I had no idea.”  Brushing at the moisture, Sonja blinked, before shaking her head in denial.  ‘I only wanted to protect you.”

“I know and appreciate your concern.  I can take care of myself.”  He dipped his head to touch her lips with his.

“Um, Nymph, I dream of nothing else except being with you.  You’re my partner, my soul mate, my heart.”

“Shh, come here and love me.”  Her fingers threaded in his hair as she tugged him closer.  A soft nip of his lip before her tongue plunged deep into his mouth.  Tracing a path of abandonment, Sonja suckled his tongue in unison with the arch of her hips to meet his.  Each thrust, each tug of her teeth, was sweet torture to his arousal.  Her kiss spilled through his soul.

Only the fearless need apply. The 2013 Coffin Hop has begun. A comment will put you in the running for an ebook copy of Wolfen Secrets, the latest release in The Western Werewolf Legend series. In appreciation of the brave, who venture into the paranormal realm, I’d love to share a short excerpt from Wolfen Secrets.  What is it like to be a werewolf in love?

Wolfen Secrets

He’d had all he could stand of the elusive wolf god and Hortence, the witch.  As far as Ty was concerned, they could both disappear.  Neither did Sonja any good anyway.  Unable to believe what he’d seen only minutes before, Ty cursed low and long under his breath.  The mighty wolf god understood everything.  Ty huffed out a laugh under his breath.  What, could he see the future?  Could he foretell the coming danger?  Ty kicked at the dirt before scowling.  Guardian did manage to keep them both from dying back there when the Indian vampires attacked.  But Christ, he was always cutting things so close.

“How long have you been standing there?”

“You’re in a foul mood,” Sonja said as she stepped toward him.  Dried blood smeared her forehead and made a dark line down her face.  Her blanket was tattered, yet managed to keep her modesty in place.  Running a hand through her gold curls, Sonja sighed before meeting his eyes.  “Well you won’t have to worry about the Guardian anymore.”

Ty cut her a questioning eye.  “What the hell are you talking about now?”

Ignoring his temper, she continued, “He won’t be driving you crazy with undue chances where our safety is concerned.”  Readjusting her blanket more tightly about her, she missed the curious surprise in his face.

“What, he’s planning on leaving?”  Ty shook his head in approval.  “Well good riddance, I say.”

She glanced up and her eyes held unshed tears.  The lush mouth, Ty could bring up from his mental archives at a whim, quivered slightly.  “Aw, come on, Sonja, you’re not making any sense.  Here, don’t cry!  I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean I wanted him to leave.”  Reaching out, he gathered her into the warmth of his embrace.  “Tell me why you’re crying.  What’s the matter?”

She sniffed and batted away tears before leaning in to rest on his shoulder.  “I guess nothing’s the matter, the way it’s supposed to be really sucks though.”  She sniffed and hiccupped before quietly tightening her hold on him.

Unable to fathom her queer reply, Ty shoved her back a couple of inches.  With his fingers, he lifted her chin.  There was something, she wasn’t telling him.  His ire rose at having to play guessing games.  Peering deep into those whiskey-colored eyes, Ty forgot for a moment what his concern was as he wished he could simply languish with her in his arms forever.  She hiccupped again and brought him back.  Furrowing a brow, he gazed patiently at her as she wiped away more tears.  “You’re not making any sense, Nymph.  Here, let me get your clothes.  I’ll help you dress.  Sit down.”  Steering her to a small patch of grass, he smoothed out a place for them both.  He sat straddle legged in front, giving her his full attention.  “What’s this about Guardian leaving and why does the way it is suck?”

Her calm, quiet nature, the veneer for all kinds of anxiety, grew more ragged.  “Talk to me.”

“I lost the girl in the fire those bastards set.”  She blinked and tears ran down her face unheeded.  Automatically, she raised her arms, baring her beautiful breasts for his view while he slid her shift into place.

Again, he gathered all his patience, following her change of direction as best he could.  “I know, Nymph, I’m sorry.  You can’t blame yourself every time the damn vampires attack innocent people.  It’s their ploy to get you out in the open.”  Reaching out, he rubbed her arm.

“I called the Guardian to help right before I went into the shift.  A lot of good it did me.  Still, I think I understand why he won’t help us.  We have to do it on our own.  The elders decree we do it on our own.  That’s what he said.  That’s why he’s leaving us, Ty.”  She dropped her head to focus on the buttons of her shirtwaist.

Her fast-paced explanation left his head spinning.  “What kind of nonsense is this?”  Ty gave her a slow warning shake of his head, as if the mere motion would stall another change of topic.  “He can’t leave now.  We still need his sorry ass!”  The truth of his statement hit him after the words left his mouth.  Ty swallowed hard as he helped her to her feet.  Yes, the beast irritated the holy hell out of him.  They still needed him desperately!
